I know what it’s like to feel you have something burning in your soul that you need to share with the world, something that has a larger purpose than just you.
I also know what it’s like to start from nothing, not knowing which tools and resources you need, how to get yourself online and much less design a brand that looks the part when there’s no room in the budget to hire a professional designer.
I know this because that was me a few years ago...
I had just left my first job out of uni, having realised that a corporate career was not for me and was feeling desperate to create a lifestyle of freedom and purpose. I thought the answer lay in life coaching and so I started nannying to earn some money, did a life coaching course and began trying to start up a life coaching business.
As you can imagine funds were low and I couldn’t pay to have someone help me, so I had to figure out how to do it all myself - build and design a website, brand myself, do my own graphics. Having always been creative, making everything look beautiful and professional was really important to me. I knew that I myself was drawn to blogs and brands that were beautifully designed and also had good content, so I knew that if I was to have any hope I needed my website to look the part.
I began to teach myself and pretty soon I was obsessed. Literally hours would go by while I watched endless Youtube videos and read through tutorials.
This all resulted in my first website which I was just quietly pretty impressed with, (today it makes me cringe just a little haha). But after my website was up and I began blogging I hit a wall. I couldn't bring myself to start coaching others because I still felt so lost and uncertain of myself. How could I legitimately promote myself as a life coach when my own life was a mess?
But I kept blogging because I was too stubborn to give up on my dream of one day having my own online business and because the design of my blog post images was a creative outlet for me. Then one day it hit me like a bolt of lightning - I spend about the same amount of time on the design of my blog post feature image as I do writing the blog post, why aren’t I doing this for a living?
And with that I went and got qualified as a graphic designer and haven’t looked back since.
